šŸ’ Ofrenda – A Beautiful Puzzle Board Game Inspired by DĆa de los Muertos

🌺 Introduction – Building the Perfect Ofrenda

OfrendaĀ is a clever puzzle board gameĀ inspired by DĆa de los Muertos, the Mexican Festival of the Dead.Players take on the role of devoted family members creating a vibrant Ofrenda (altar)Ā to honor their ancestors, placing portraits, marigolds and candles to keep every spirit close to what they loved most in life.

With its blend of pattern matching, spatial planning and light strategy, OfrendaĀ delivers an experience that’s both thoughtful and deeply thematic. It’s a puzzle of love, memory, and color whilst also looking absolutely gorgeous on the table.

šŸŽØ First Impressions – Color, Culture, and Craftsmanship

Right out of the box OfrendaĀ dazzles. The artwork bursts with life, celebrating Mexican culture through rich colors, intricate detail and playful iconography. The title font, the illustrations, even the small touches on the sides of the box all feel intentional and cohesive.

The back of the boxĀ is also a joy. It is clearly laid out, with component photos that give players a feel for the gameplay before even opening it. It sparks immediate excitement and curiosity.

Inside the production quality continues to impress:

  • Dual-layer player boardsĀ that prevent tokens from sliding around.

  • Wooden marigold tokensĀ add a tactile delight.

  • High-quality cardsĀ bring the characters and spirits to life.

Everything feels premium and well thought out, matching the care that goes into building an Ofrenda itself.

šŸ•Æļø How It Plays – Honor, Harmony, and the Art of the Puzzle

At its heart, OfrendaĀ captures the spirit of DĆa de los Muertos. A time to celebrate loved ones who’ve passed by creating an altar filled with memories and meaning.Your goal: build the most beautiful OfrendaĀ and appease more spiritsĀ than your opponents.

šŸ”„ The Flow of Play

Each round, players take turns performing a simple but meaningful sequence:

  1. Choose a Portrait: Select one from the shared display, placing marigold tokens on the cards you skip. You may also take a candle from above your chosen portrait, though any other candle costs another marigold from your supply.

  2. Replenish the Display: Slide remaining cards and candles to fill empty spaces, then draw new ones to restore the display until their is four of each.

  3. Place or Discard a Portrait: Add a portrait card to your Ofrenda to work toward your scoring conditions or discard it for three marigolds. Portraits ā€œlight upā€ once fully surrounded and their unique conditions are met.

  4. Add Marigolds & Candles: When you complete an area surrounded by three cards, place new marigolds or candles in those spots. Timing these placements is key, you can only do this the turn the area is surrounded!

The game continues for 12 rounds, after which you’ll flip any remaining completed portraits and candles for scoring.

🧮 Scoring the Spirits

  • Lit Portraits:Ā 2 points for each adjacent lit portrait, 1 point for each adjacent unlit.

  • Marigolds:Ā 1 point per lit portrait.

  • Candles:Ā 2 points for each adjacent lit portrait.

  • Unlit items:Ā Score 0.

The player with the most points wins, having built the most harmonious and spirit-pleasing Ofrenda.

🌼 Positives – A Celebration of Art and Strategy

OfrendaĀ shines on multiple levels.

  • Beautiful cultural theme:Ā The Day of the Dead inspiration feels respectful, colorful, and authentic.

  • Exceptional production quality:Ā Dual-layer boards and marigold tokens show care in design.

  • Clever puzzly gameplay:Ā It’s a satisfying blend of strategy, pattern matching and planning.

  • Interactive drafting:Ā Unlike many puzzle games, this one doesn’t feel like multiplayer solo. Your choices impact others through the shared card display and candle tokens bonuses.

āš–ļø Negatives – Decisions, Spirits and a Touch of Luck

While OfrendaĀ is a joy to play, it’s not without its challenges:

  • šŸŒ€ Analysis paralysis warning:Ā Each portrait has its own scoring condition, so players prone to overthinking may find turns slow.

  • šŸ’€ Theme sensitivity:Ā If you’re uncomfortable with games involving spirits or death, the Day of the Dead theme may not resonate with you.

  • šŸŽ² Luck factor:Ā The shared display means luck plays a part as sometimes the perfect portrait simply doesn’t appear when you need it.

None of these issues ruin the experience, but they do shape who this game will appeal to most.
