This weekend saw our quarterly Star Wars Legion tournament take place at Retrocave, bringing together players from across the region for a full day of tactical battles played using incredible armies and plenty of Star Wars themed terrain.

For those new to the game, Star Wars Legion is a tabletop miniatures game where players build armies from iconic factions and characters across the Star Wars universe before taking them onto the battlefield to fight for objectives, outmanoeuvre their opponents and score victory points.
At Retrocave, we run a dedicated Star Wars Legion gaming club every Tuesday, giving players the chance to learn the game, improve their skills, try new armies and prepare for competitive events. While our weekly club nights are where friendships and strategies are built, our quarterly tournaments are where players can truly test everything they have learned against new opponents travelling from further afield to join us.
And this event was no different.
What Are Our Star Wars Legion Tournaments All About?
For us, tournaments are about much more than simply finding out who wins.
They are about bringing people together for a brilliant day of gaming, creating memorable experiences and celebrating the hobby we all love. While the competitive side of Star Wars Legion is important, the atmosphere around the tables is what makes these events special.
Because of our passion for the game, we always try to elevate our tournaments beyond just putting down some terrain on tables and playing a couple rounds. We do this by creating themed battlefields, prepare goodie bags for attendees, provide prizes that help players on their journey with the game and include medals that help capture that Star Wars feeling.

We also add plenty of small touches throughout the day to make everything run smoothly. From the pairings board showing players their next opponent, to terrain reference cards on each table and our pop-up shop for those last-minute gaming supplies, every detail helps create a better experience for everyone attending.
Though still one of my favourite parts of running these events is seeing the room come alive. Watching players get excited about the tables, discovering what they have received in their goodie bags and hearing friendly banter across the battlefield is exactly why we love hosting Star Wars Legion tournaments in the UK here in Poole, Dorset.
Faction Split and Army Lists at Shadows Over Tatooine
This tournament was a particularly exciting one as it was the first event where Mandalorians were officially allowed to take part. We also allowed players to bring the Customisable Mandalorian Leader and Hunter as their upgrade cards and units had been revealed.
This resulted in a strong Mandalorian presence, but every faction was represented across the tournament in total which was great to see.
The final faction split was:
1 x Grand Army of the Republic
1 x Separatist Alliance
2 x Galactic Empire
4 x Rebel Alliance
4 x Mandalorian armies

One of the most interesting parts of the event was seeing two factions become particularly popular and noticing some similarities between the lists being played.
The Rebel Alliance players heavily favoured the classic combination of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker on Tauntauns, with every Rebel player including this duo in their army.
Meanwhile, the Mandalorian players were consistently bringing Bo-Katan Kryze into their lists. Rather than focusing entirely on a single clan, many players chose mixed Mandalorian forces, often combining Clan Wren Veterans with Bo-Katan Kryze to make the most of the Mandalorians Are Stronger Together keyword and the We Fight for Our Family keyword to up the token generation that is accessible when Bo Katan Kryze wields the Darksaber.
It will be fascinating to see whether mixed Mandalorian armies continue to dominate as players get more experience with the faction or whether dedicated clan-focused lists become more common.
Missions and Strategies Played
The tournament saw a great variety of missions being played in the list. Going through the data every currently available mission made an appearance across the event. Though there were some missions that did stand out as particularly popular.
For primary missions, players regularly selected:
Payload
Breakthrough
Bunker Assault
The most popular secondary mission was:
Sweep and Clear
Closely followed by:
Destroy Enemy Base
Surface Scan
For advantages, faction-specific options were naturally popular, while Advanced Intel continued to be a must play choice. Other frequently selected advantages included Ordnance and Cunning Deployment.
The variety of missions helped create interesting matchups throughout the day and with every battlefield offering something different for players to overcome there were plenty to challenge players and keep them engaged.
Tournament Day Overview
Round 1: The First Battles Begin

The first round of any tournament is always fascinating because it is when players discover what everyone has brought and how the day might unfold. With Mandalorians entering competitive play for the first time, there was plenty of curiosity around how they would perform. The faction split also created an interesting question: would one faction quickly rise above the rest or would the tournament remain wide open for any faction to claim the top spot?
Across the venue, the games developed very differently. Downstairs in the cave, players settled into their games, carefully making methodical decisions and finding their rhythm. Battles were tactical, with players feeling out their opponents and conserving their forces. Upstairs, however, the fighting was much more aggressive. The tables saw heavy casualties, intense decisions and moments where every movement and measurement mattered. Watching players carefully weigh up their options and execute precise plays was a fantastic showcase of what makes Star Wars Legion such an engaging game.
After the first round concluded, the initial standings began to form. The Rebel players had made a particularly strong start, with many finding themselves towards the top of the standings. With the first round done everyone now had a chance to catch up, enjoy lunch provided by the Retrocave team, discuss the games and prepare for the next round.
Round 2: The Pressure Builds

With the first round completed, the pairings became even more competitive. Players were no longer just facing a new opponent, they were facing a completely different battlefield challenge as well. Each table represented a different Star Wars world, with unique terrain layouts creating new tactical problems to solve.
The second round showcased the strategic depth of Star Wars Legion, with players adapting their plans, adjusting their approaches, and fighting through incredibly close games. The victory point differences in this round were much tighter, showing just how competitive the event had become.
At the end of the round, all four Rebel players had secured victories, putting them in an excellent position heading into the final match. The Mandalorian players continued to perform strongly, staying close behind, while the lone Grand Army of the Republic player also secured an important win during this round.
Round 3: The Final Showdown

The final round arrived with the pressure at its highest. After weeks of practice and hours spent preparing their armies, everything came down to these final games.
The heat of the day was beginning to take its toll, but the players stayed focused as they fought for their final positions. Every objective mattered, every victory point counted and every decision could change the final standings.
The result was a series of tense and exciting games, with players pushing their armies to the limit.
