In this weeks article we are reflecting back across the course of this year and sharing with you some of our favourite games that were released. With so many great games to choose from picking our favourites was no easy task though we have been able to shortlist it to these five fantastic games.
Top Party Game: 13 Beavers
13 Beavers has to be our top party game of this year with its simple higher or lower rule set it has been a game that is easy to get to the table and brings so much happiness and laughter. It has been great fun sharing the joy this game brings with so many people from our board game monthly meets to games with friends and family. This will definitely be a game I will be playing this Christmas holiday.
Top Pocket Game: Rafter Five
This small box game really packs a punch in gameplay and has been on many journeys with us this year. We love how the box is part of the game and the fun dexterity nature always keeps you on your toes as you grow and build up the raft together. The games are always good fun and it offers a fantastic amount of tension making the victor always a surprise to everyone around the table.
Top Travel Game: Castle Combo
Castle Combo is a masterpiece of a game that truly surprised me with the depth and strategy it offered. In the game you are drafting cards into your tableau to create a grid that will score the most amount of points at the end based on the requirements on the cards you have chosen. Simple to learn and easy to teach with an abundance of strategy that can be found within the cards.
Top Strategy Game: Lord of the Rings The Duel for Middle Earth
Lord of the Rings The Duel for Middle Earth is a game that really shone for me in the depth of strategy that you can find within this game. With a variety of paths to be victory you have to stay vigilant. In the game each player will play as the forces of Sauron or as the Fellowship and you will be drafting cards as you explore the land trying to either conquer middle earth, unite the races or claim the one ring to rule them all. The game offers a nice amount of push and pull between the players as well as some great synergies to get better cards in the future. This has been one I have thoroughly enjoyed playing with my wife.
Top Family Game: Harmonies
Our top game for our Family Game category and my personal favourite of this year is the amazing Harmonies. This clever game fuses pattern building with open drafting as you collect tiles to place out on your board to satisfy the needs of animal cards you have collected. There is something that makes this game so peaceful that makes it so relaxing to play. It plays great with several players or it just being played solo and always offers an interesting challenge. If this is not in your collection, I could not recommend this game highly enough.
